Perhaps the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day is anticipated by couples around the globe. Hotels and restaurants would be fully booked. Even resorts, spas, and recreation centers would be filled with hand-holding, starry-eyed lovers.
But it wasn’t always a day for love.
How did Valentine’s Day start?
There are several stories relating to the origins of Valentine’s Day.
Some scholars say that it stemmed from the pagan holiday for fertility, Lupercalia. The festival was so popular that it persisted when the Roman Empire converted to Christianity. So the church simply declared the holiday a feast for Saint Valentine.
As for St. Valentine, there are in fact, thousands of martyrs that go by that name. There are only two who are recognized by scholars to be patrons for the Day of Hearts. Both were priests, but were executed years apart (on February 14th).
The romantic allusions to Valentine’s Day have a few interpretations, too. Some say it’s due to poet Geoffrey Chaucer’s works. Others say it’s all thanks to the Duke of Orléans, who sent love letters to his wife while he was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Today, it’s common practice to give cards, flowers, and chocolates to your beloved on February 14.
While most of the world looks forward to it each year, many countries celebrate the Day of Hearts in different dates.
St. George’s Day (April 23rd) in Catalonia region of Spain for instance, is a big day for exchanging books and roses. White Day (March 14th) in Japan and South Korea on the other hand, gives men a chance to shower women with non-chocolate sweets.
Meanwhile, Valentine’s isn’t really celebrated in Brazil because it falls on carnival day. Instead, they have Dia dos Namorados (Lovers’ Day) every June 12th.
