Considered to be the holiest month in Islam faith, Ramadan is a time for reflection, growth, and charity.
It’s celebrated on the 9th month according to the Muslim lunar calendar. Muslims must fast for 29 to 30 days, so they can focus on nurturing their faith with Allah. Fasting is done between sunrise and sunset each day; consuming food and water are prohibited. However, they can later look forward to a proper meal known as ‘Iftar’.
What is Iftar and how does one observe it?
Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islamic faith. While the meal before dawn is Suhoor, Iftar is the fast-breaking meal eaten after sunset. Unlike regular dinners, there are some considerations that are reserved for this occasion.
The best way to prepare for Iftar starts with a well-balanced menu of known fast breakers like pakoras, samosas, and fruit chaat. Throw in a couple of main course dishes like Biryani, Haleem, etc. adds variety to the available menu. Don’t forget the khajoors, too.
Make sure to have lots of water and fresh juices ready. Fasting typically occurs in hot summer days, so people need all the right hydration to sustain them during this time. The Holy Month is a family affair as well, so expect relatives and friends to bring their kids along.
You can’t expect kids to like all the spicy stuff either. So prepare kid-friendly meals like cut vegetables and fruit, chicken nuggets, cheese pizza, and other Halal food items. Expect that fasters will start with small bites or a yogurt drink, and eat full meals after the evening prayer.
Preparing a prayer room is an important aspect if you want to have a successful Iftar. There should be prayer mats, and separate praying areas (for men and women). Don’t forget to setup a tea station so guests can help themselves before and during eating.
