What’s in a smile?
For a long time, we assumed that we smile because we feel happy or content. However, many studies show that this act is more complex than we previously thought. While it’s true that smiling is sometimes due to cheerfulness, it can also be a natural response to various experiences.
For instance: some people smile when they feel embarrassed or helpless; and others involuntarily smile when a stranger does the same thing.
Is there such a thing as a fake smile?
Why we smile has been studied by scientists for years. Thanks to their research, we now know that there is such a thing as a genuine smile – called Duchenne smile. This happens when someone’s grin reaches their eyes and creates those tiny wrinkles, known as crow’s feet.
Experts say that you can’t voluntarily activate the muscles around your eyes for the Duchenne smile. So when you see someone display this, you can be sure that it’s the real deal. Does this mean non-Duchenne smiles are fake? Not really. Scientists prefer to call that type of smile as ‘polite’.
