Summer just isn’t complete without a trip to the pool or the beach. If you’re lucky enough, you might even be invited to the year’s most sought-after soirée! But hey, who says you can’t host your own, too?
Planning for a pool party will need more attention to detail than most. When done right however, it’s sure to be one unforgettable affair.
How to Plan the Best Pool Party
Dreaming of hosting a picture-perfect blowout? Here are the basics for a fun poolside bash for kids or adults:
- Plan 2-4 weeks in advance. Shock your pool with chlorine at least a week prior. This helps balance out chemicals and ensure clean, clear water come the day of the event. Have your area sprayed for mosquitoes, too. Prepare food covers against flies and insects. For natural repellents, try thyme, mint, rosemary, lavender, or basil.
- Safety first. Instead of using china or glass, opt for metal or high-quality plastic for serving and eating food. There should be coolers to keep drinks cold and burners/crockpots for hot dishes. Keep trash cans out of sight but available at all times. Have extra towels, sunscreen, bug spray, and flip flops, just in case.
- Keep things light – in terms of seating and lighting in your venue. There should be enough space so people (especially kids) don’t keep bumping into each other. Light columns are great for standout effect that isn’t as bright as flood lights.
- Serve fresh fruits and vegetables of the season. It’s summer, so include in-season items such as honeydew melons, tomatoes, avocadoes, and pineapples in the menu. Finger food is a wonderful alternative to plated meals as they’re portable. Try fruit skewers, crostinis, stuffed tomatoes, grilled shrimps, vegetable pizza, and fish tacos.
- Tie it all together with a theme. A theme will not only wow guests, it will set the tone for your entire party! Why not throw a Nautical-inspired fête with melon sailboats, anchor pool floats, and lighthouse décor? Or how about a pink flamingo feast with pink lemonade, pink beach balls, and a pink lei for attendees?
Don’t forget to tell guests to come in their best – and comfortable – swimwear!
