Halloween isn’t just a night for trick-or-treating or classic horror movies. Before it was heavily commercialized, its roots date back to an old Celtic festival called Samhain. In fact, not everything on this holiday is about the dead. In ancient times, there was plenty of fortune-telling and games, too!
The Original Halloween
The ancient Celtic festival Samhain was believed to have been celebrated even before the first Celts came to Ireland over 2500 years ago. Samhain marked the end of harvest and of the summer season, signaling the beginning of the ‘dark half of the year’. The coming of the cold season was generally associated with death, sickness, and ill health.
They believed that during this time, the barrier between the living and spirit worlds was weak. The dead would often come to visit, and supernatural beings can play tricks on people as well. To appease the deities, communties would gather with Druids (Celtic priests) to burn crops and cattle as sacrifice in sacred bonfires.
Halloween Traditions
Despite the spread of Christianity in Celtic territories, these pagan rituals persisted. By the Middle Ages, what we know now as Jack-o-lanterns (originally made from carved turnips) were used to help ward off malevolent fairies and witches. Fortune-telling and mischief-making were also common.
Today, Halloween is still celebrated on October 31st, before All Saints’ Day on November 1st. Old customs such as trick-or-treating is still observed, as well as familiar games like bobbing for apples. In the 1920s and 1950s, Halloween was mostly for children. Eventually, its popularity grew to include adults, too.
Nowadays, anyone can enjoy Halloween through various activities: from attending parties, watching scary movies, telling ghost stories, to playing at escape rooms, having your fortunes told, or re-enacting old traditions, like the Samhain.
