There are various kinds of baptism. There’s the customary way of using water by pouring, immersion, or sprinkling. But there’s also baptism through profession, by fire, and other initiation rites.
Origins of Baptism Rites
The most well-known baptism is that of John the Baptist. But even before then, people all over the world have already been doing their own forms of purification rituals.
For example, there are accounts that Egyptian babies were ‘cleansed’ with water to help rid them of impurities from the womb. In ancient Mesopotamia, people would sprinkle themselves with water before entering temples.
Baptism of infants wouldn’t be popular until the 5th century. It was Saint Augustine who believed that newborns had sin, because of the original sin from Adam, the first man created by God. As such, it became necessary to baptize babies to help save their souls. This made sense back then, as infant mortality rates were high.
Modern Baptism Invitations
Baptism is still practiced today by different faiths, not just Christians.
Lutherans for instance, believe in being baptized as a ‘confession of faith’. Converting to Judaism would require a form of baptism, called immersion. Several religions, like Evangelical Christians and Pentecostals on the other hand, believe that a simple declaration of faith is enough.
For those who plan on baptizing their little angels, these editable christening invitation layouts should be a great starting point.
