Did you know that there are about 4 babies born every second?

Since recorded history, families across countries and various cultures have celebrated pregnancy, along with actual births. These celebrations may differ in name – but they all honor mother and child in one way or another. One of the most common affairs held today are baby showers.

Baby Shower Origins

In general, ‘showers’ are gatherings for the mom-to-be so she can enjoy the company of friends and family while receiving gifts. The term may have originated from a 19th century custom, when presents were put inside a parasol so when it opened, it would ‘shower’ the recipient (usually a bride-to-be; hence the term also applies to bridal showers).

Depending on the country and/or culture, birth announcements are sometimes rooted in tradition and superstition. In Bulgaria for instance, it’s considered bad luck to give gifts before a baby is born. Meanwhile in several districts in India, some expectant mothers wear beautiful bangles with flowers as they listen to pleasing music.

Most traditional parties are attended strictly by women. However, modern bashes allow men to come as well. In the United Kingdom for example, there’s a celebration called ‘wetting the baby’s head’, where expectant fathers go out with male friends and/or relatives to drink beer. They do other activities too, like play video games, watch sports, or go fishing.

Nowadays, there are various parties to mark this moment of joy. There are gender reveals, which began in 2008 and has since become a trend for expectant mothers. There’s also a baby sprinkle, which is normally held for succeeding children after firstborns.

In place of baby showers, there are some families that choose sip-and-see’s instead. This is done after the birth of the child and are normally small gatherings for close friends and family only. To avoid stress, festivities are planned by professionals, and are usually hosted by friends, sisters- or mothers-in-law. Moms planning their own parties is quite common, too.
